SKY SQUIRES VISIT BOY SCOUTS
OCTOBER 27, 2012
by: Darrell Honey
The Sky Squires R/C Model Airplane Club were invited by the Greater St. Louis Area Council of Boy Scouts to assist in Boy Scout Aviation Merit Badge Day. We were asked to spend the day giving instruction and demos on R/C aircraft at the Williamson County Airport. Our instructors taught aviation history, how R/C models work, what makes a wing carry an aircraft and how a glow engine works. This included mock-ups and an "exploded" glow engine with all parts explained plus a static display in our assigned hanger. There were approximately 50 Boy Scouts in groups of 10 with rides in full scale planes, the "hands on" flying of model aircraft and exciting demos of aerobatic R/C models. This event was held on a windy, blustery October day but everyone seemed to enjoy the experience.
The following club members participated:
Darrell Honey Acie Gwaltney
Doug Gwaltney Jason Holder
Tom Sosnowski Eric Lyon
Jim Tucker Richard Morgan
Fred Dippel Jake Robards
Gene Farris Clayton Simmons
Wes Flannell Grover Dickerson
Chris Glisson Harold Rumsey
