Fun at the Field ( Updated )

Flying at the field last Sunday was great, although a bit on the windy side. We had a lot of flying going on. Doc maidened his new Rascal with it's twin cylinder 4 stroke engine and flaps set up. Doug was at the controls to help sort it out. What a gracefull looking plane in the air!

Jason Holder, a new member, put on a show for us with his red and white Pulse. Doug did, too, with his bright red profile aerobat. There were several of us flying and having a great time. I finally dusted off my Gee Bee D model and put her up in the air. She flew so well, I didn't get a chance to fly much with my other planes I had brought. I wanted to get practiced up this year before I flew her. I put in quite a bit of time building her from a short kit, so I try to be careful with her, but still have fun. Speaking of builders . . . Wow !!! . . . Jim Tucker is really outdoing himself! He is building a very large scale De Havilland Mosquito and it is starting to look very impressive. Jim is an avid builder and has some very nice large scale planes he has built. My favorite so far is his Vought F4U Corsair. That may change after he finishes this one.

We had another maiden flight, too. Tom Sosnowski flew his Kaos, a really neat airplane! It seemed to fly quite well after a little tinkering. The wind was quite a factor. I had a hard landing with my little UMX Beat 3d, the wind quit blowing as I was bringing her in, crabbing in a cross wind, trying to line up with our small concrete runway and it dropped very quickly about two feet off the ground in the grass. I had very minimal damage and it is ready to go again. We also, had a couple of planes come in dead stick. One came up short of the runway. Luckily, it was not damaged at all.

Coming soon: recent pictures in the photo Albums. ( New pictures posted in More At the Field )

As usual, we welcome newcomers! Come fly with us or just come and watch.

A Tough Day at the Field ( Updated! )

I had an interesting day at the flying field today. The weather was great with 5-7mph wind, so off to the field I went. It was getting late in the day and I guess i was in a bit of a hurry getting everything ready. I got out my trusty old homeade Clip Wing Cub and turned on my transmitter and hooked up the battery and off it went. The take off was unevenfull and a few clicks of trim and it was flying great. I was flying around and then banked it over and something white came floating down. I closed the throttle way back and started coming in for a landing having an uneasy feeling something realy bad was about to happen. I got in closer and could see the battery dangleing around under the plane. I throttled it back to a crawl and brought it in for a landing giving it just enough power to mush it in. I got it down with no damage! I could not believe it. I do need to make a new battery hatch and work on a better battery restraint. Lesson learned, check out your planes frequently. Today could have been a dissaster!

I then, go to my other plane. It's my new E-Flight UMX Beast 3D which I have not got to fly yet. I must say I was a little nervous, hearing how tricky some of the micro planes are to fly. I got it out of the box and carefully checked the CG. After that I checked to make sure none of the controls were reversed. I also dialed in bucket loads of exponential on all controll serfaces. I must say, with it throttled back and trimmed out it was a pussy cat to fly. It was not jittery at all. In fairness though this is the new AS3X gyro stableized model that came out not too long ago and I was running a lot of exponential.. I was disapointed by only having one battery for it right now. I must have more, lots more! I am hoping for decent flying weather this Sunday that we can all enjoy! I'm looking forward to seeing my friends and lots more flying.

I have flown the Beast quite a bit now and can say it is a reel hoot to fly, especially on a calm day. It will handle the wind quite well, it is just more fun to try new manuevers on a calmer day. I am fairly new to aerobatics. After I got comfortable with it and was able to pull off a manuever I have never done. I did an inverted flat spin and made it out of it much to my amazement! I learned this on a flight sim and wasn't even sure it would work. It did! The Beast has a very quick roll rate and lots of rudder and elevator control and plenty of power. It will do a really nice knife edge too as well as most other aerobatics! This a great little plane that comes in a small package.

Mall Show 2012 (Updated)

I have to say, I think we had a very successful Mall Show this year. We had a lot of very interesting airplanes. We also had a lot of interest in our planes from the public and the flight simulators were a big hit as well. I would like to give a big thanks to the other clubs participating with us and to all of our members for bringing their planes out for display. Last year I only had one lonely airplane ready, but this year I brought four. We <strike>will</strike> have more pictures up <strike>soon</strike>.

It's a great hobby and we would like to invite people to come out to our field on Sunday afternoons to see us fly or fly with us. We have instructors to help inexperienced pilots get started. We will be flying almost every Sunday as long as it is not too wet or windy.

(Update: the pictures have been posted on the Photo Albums-eric)
